🔍 Longitudinal or Transverse Cracks?
Did you know that the direction and shape of a crack can reveal a lot about its cause? 🤔 Cracks are classified into cold cracks, hot cracks, and lamellar cracks. The latter form along the grain boundaries of the material. Cold cracks can appear due to temperature differences during the transformation of austenite into martensite, hydrogen diffusion, or stress.
⚠️ Cracks can occur not only in the weld itself—they are also often found in the heat-affected zone as well as in the welded material. A crack is one of the most dangerous welding defects, which, even if initially small, can quickly propagate and lead to a costly failure. 🚨
