During the implementation of one of our projects, we encountered a very interesting phenomenon related to the radiographic testing of duplex steel. 🔍
During the initial radiographic tests, we found that the joint did not meet the product quality requirements. However, out of pure curiosity, we decided to additionally evaluate it using visual testing. 👀
To our surprise, it turned out that the joint met the quality requirements, and the concavity visible on the radiograph was an apparent indication.
At our client's request, we took several reference radiographs at different weld face heights. It turned out that duplex steel reacts quite aggressively to changes in face height. ⚙️📏 What is visible on the radiograph is the result of the weld face being completely removed, leaving only the weld root.
This is a great example of how apparent indications in NDT can lead to incorrect conclusions if we do not look at the joint from multiple perspectives. 🔧📐📷
